A long time ago, on the planet Botania in the isolated kingdom of Kinbrolds, lived a society that was in harmony with nature. A variety of different people and creatures lived there, such as elves, dwarfs, fairies, and humans who all possessed magical powers. The trees that surrounded the entire continent of Kinbrolds were the root of these powers. The sap that flows from the trees is filled with magic, giving all of the people the ability to grant their wildest wishes and heal the sick. Throughout history, this society worked together to protect the trees, their source of power, and their land. Until the Great Schism of 112. During this cursed time, the Avarincian family forcefully took control of the kingdom, splitting Kinbrolds into two societies. To the right of the river resided the Tufts - the elves, fairies, and dwarfs. To the left of the river resided the Avarincian royal family and the ruling families of the Hares and the Rabbits - the nobles. These ruling families coveted the power rooted in the trees, but without the proper knowledge held within the Tuft lineage, their only means of obtaining this power for themselves was to cut them down. As a result, The Brownings Company rose to power. A large company that would slowly grow its influence and expands harvesting operations into the forest more and more, eventually becoming a powerful entity within the kingdom. Unlike the forest dwellers who strive to protect the trees and keep them alive so that they may provide for their society for many more generations, The Brownings Company simply sees the trees as products with no other purpose but to be cut down and used for their own benefit. After some time, the two societies became completely divided by the Carnelian Mountains, utilizing the Arcadian river as the only means of trading and contact, usually done by either trading goods and services or Kinbrolds’ currency, the Bud. The larger picture In the world of Kinbrolds, the issue at hand is deforestation, with a focus on how large corporations utilize deforestation for economic gain. The conflict between the Avarincian monarch and the forest dwellers symbolizes the struggle to protect natural environments, with the hope of bringing awareness to the negative effects that clearing out ecosystems has on the planet. With this world revolving around the magical forests and the groups that want to both protect and exploit them, we hope to highlight the issue of deforestation through the lens of material causes and drivers while also looking at the negative outcomes. The reason we want to focus on deforestation is because it has a wide variety of impacts from climate concerns, to harming natural wildlife, and questions about land exploitation and expansion. We wanted to address this issue in Kinbrolds by creating a world where trees are highly coveted and harvested by one group representing those engaging in deforestation, and another group that lives with the trees, representing the natural wildlife and people that are harmed by mass deforestation. The primary audience that we hope to reach with the world of Kinbrolds is young people that either care about deforestation already or those that would be more inclined to care about the state of the environment and future. This is the primary audience because while increasing awareness around deforestation is important, the goal of Kinbrolds is also to demonstrate to the audience who perpetuates deforestation and for what reasons it is so prevalent. This is important to do because unless there are individuals that actually care about and understand some of the systemic causes surrounding deforestation then any push to help reduce deforestation will be ineffective. The world of Kinbrolds should equip the audience with a better understanding of the issue and push them to engage with forest advocacy and call for systemic changes to how the different actors involved with deforestation exist and operate within society.
